Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services. You can help protect yourself from scammers by verifying that the contact is a Microsoft Agent or Microsoft Employee and that the phone number is an official Microsoft global customer service number.
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D, just to name a few. It's also integral to the intranet applications and other e-business solutions that are the foundation of corporate computing.
It provides the libraries, the Java Virtual Machine, and other components to run applets and applications written in the Java programming language. In addition, two key deployment technologies are part of the JRE: Java Plug-in, which Enables Applets to Run in Popular Browsers; and Web Start, which deploys standalone applications over a network. Many cross platform applications also require Java to operate properly.
Itis a programming language and computing platform first released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. There are lots of applications and websites that will not work unless you have Java installed, and more are created every day. The program is fast, secure, and reliable. From laptops to datacenters, game consoles to scientific supercomputers, cell phones to the Internet, Java is everywhere! Itis at the heart of the digital lifestyle. It's the platform for launching careers, exploring human-to-digital interfaces, architecting the world's best applications, and unlocking innovation everywhere—from garages to global organizations.
Why should I upgrade to the latest version?
The latest version contains important enhancements to improve performance, stability and security of the applications that run on your machine. Installing this free update will ensure that your applications continue to run safely and efficiently.
What will I get when I download software?
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is what you get when you download software. The JRE consists of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Java platform core classes, and supporting Java platform libraries. The JRE is the runtime portion of the software, which is all you need to run it in your Web browser.
What is Java Plug-in software?
The program is a component of the (JRE). The JRE allows applets written in the programming language to run inside various web browsers. The Plug-in software is not a standalone program and cannot be installed separately.
I have heard the terms Virtual Machine and JVM. Is this software?
The Virtual Machine is only one aspect of software that is involved in web interaction. The Virtual Machine is built right into your software download and helps run Java apps.
Note: When your installation completes, you may need to restart your browser (close all browser windows and re-open) to enable the installation.

This tutorial shows how to install Sun Java JDK and NetBeans IDE on the fresh Fedora 7 installation. The readers I had in mind when assembling this are the people who are anxious to start using NetBEans and Sun's Java SE on their newly installed Fedora systems. Some of the bits and pieces on the topics I found on the Internet are assembled into this tutorial in order to make it as comprehensive as possible. I tried to follow the HowToForge document format. I have not tried this on the x64 architecture, but it should be very similar. I would welcome any feedback on that.
An assumption is that Fedora's default Java is already installed. For example, as it is in the situation after installing Fedora 7 as described in the article The Perfect Setup - Fedora 7 by Mr. Falco Timme, which I highly recommend. We will use Mozilla Firefox to access different websites and Fedora's system terminal to run commands.
1 Preliminary Note
My goal is to install Sun Java SE 6 JDK and Netbeans 5.5 so that both are accessible for all users. The tutorial includes proper configuring of Java library documentation and configuring of NetBeans's basic parameters. After installation both java and javac from Sun's Java SE 6 JDK will be accessible for all users in through terminal window as well as from within NetBeans 5.5 IDE.
2 Downloading and Installing Sun's Java SE 6 JDK
First go to Sun's Java SE Downloads page and download latest JDK (JDK 6 Update 2 at the time this article is made).
Click on Donwload button, then select Accept License Agreement, and check the box next to Linux RPM in self-extracting file (jdk-6u2-linux-i586-rpm.bin). Save file under /home/tomo/Desktop folder.
Assuming that the file has been downloaded to your desktop folder (in my case /home/tomo/Desktop) open your terminal by clicking on menu in Applications/System Tools/Terminal and in the terminal window execute the following commands.
To become root:
Change working folder to your Desktop:
Make the JDK installer file executable:
Finally, execte JDK install:
Click on space to scroll down to the end of the license agreement, then type in yes and let the installer unzip the RPM files and perform the installation.
After the installation has been done you can delete installer and the temporary files it created on your desktop by issuing the following commands:
Type y when prompted to delete each file (make sure you are not deleting something else).
This should install JDK on your Fedora 7. This part pretty much follows the instructions from Sun's website. Please check Java SE 6 Linux Release Notes Linux Installation (32-bit).
